Oracle to buy Sun

Just quick first thoughts….

What’s going to happen with MySQL then?
What about the hardware business?

Neither of these points mentioned in the announcement but I am sure we will all find out more soon.
I guess its got more chance of getting through the regulatory bodies than IBM would have had too.

Makes you wonder if they are going to kill off mysql or parts of it for a more community flavoured version of Oracle or if they are just going to keep their entire product line. Either way, seems like a good time to make the switch to postgres.

Good article about impact on open-source offerings: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/04/oracle-acquires-sun-ars-explores-the-impact-on-open-source.ars

Of interest: “The value of Java to Oracle is almost entirely confined to the server market, so it seems extremely unlikely that Oracle will want to follow through with Sun’s efforts to restore Java’s relevance in the browser with projects like JavaFX which is aimed squarely at competing with Adobe’s deeply entrenched Flash framework.”

Whatever Oracle does to MySQL, it’ll live on anyway…
